From heritage buildings to colourful trams, the MOTAT receives a warm makeover you don’t want to miss, and features food trucks, carols and more.
  • Laneway Festival: One of New Zealand's most popular music festivals, Laneway is held on Waitangi Day and features a stellar lineup of local and global superstars. In addition to outstanding music, you can also find food trucks, diverse stages and a proudly Kiwi atmosphere.
  • Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta: This thrilling spectacle is held every January to mark and celebrate the founding of Auckland way back in 1840. The Regatta is New Zealand’s oldest sporting event and features multiple types of boat races spread throughout the day.

What do I need to know before driving in Auckland?

Driving in Auckland is similar to driving in any major city. The roads are well-maintained, and signage is clear. However, traffic can become heavy, especially during peak hours. Here’s what you should know when you are hiring a car in Auckland.

  • Drive on the left-hand side.
  • Plan extra time for peak hours due to traffic and congestion.
  • Follow the speed limit - The standard limit is 50km/h (unless otherwise signposted) and highways are 100km/h. In George Street, a 10km/h limit is enforced.
  • Seat belts are mandatory.
  • Yield at roundabouts.
  • Only hands-free mobile phones are allowed.
  • The alcohol limit is 0.05% for drivers over 20.
  • Rural roads may be narrow, windy or hilly.
  • All three toll roads in New Zealand are located near Auckland. Check your route before leaving to see if you will drive on a toll road.
  • Park in designated lots like George or Customs Street. Hotel parking may cost extra.
  • Be aware of weather conditions - Rain and strong winds can affect your driving. Reduce your speed or stop driving when necessary, anticipate gusts, and avoid sudden braking to maintain control.
  • Traffic can be heavy in Auckland. Expect congestion near the CBD and on motorways.

Tips for Driving an SUV:

Whether it’s your first time driving an SUV or you're a seasoned Pro, there are a few details you should keep in mind when you’re hiring an SUV:

  • Watch your speed: SUVs are large and handle differently from a standard vehicle. They are not designed to make quick, sharp turns and may take longer to reach maximum speed. Try to go slowly around corners, and drive more cautiously in the snow or rain.
  • Be mindful of spacing: As an SUV is bigger than a typical vehicle, you will be taking up more space on the road than you realise. Leave plenty of room between you and other vehicles, and consider how long it may take you to stop if you need to. Avoid sudden movements and brake slowly.
  • Check your mirrors: Your mirrors will be further out than they would be on a sedan or compact car. This is to help you minimise your blind spots and avoid accidents. Since you are sitting higher than you may be used to, keep in mind it could be harder to see things lower to the ground, such as cars directly behind you.
  • Know your features: Some of our SUVs come equipped with additional safety features such as Toyota Safety Sense. Be sure to ask our staff when you pick up your vehicle to know how to use any additional features you may not be used to.

Auckland SUV Rentals FAQs

What is the definition of an SUV?

An SUV, or sports utility vehicle, is defined as a vehicle that combines the features of a passenger car with the capabilities of an off-road vehicle.

These key features include high ground clearance, large interior spaces, a high roofline and the availability of four-wheel driving. However, not all SUVs are 4WDs.

Are SUVs considered compact cars?

No, SUVs are not considered "compact cars" when renting. However, the term "compact SUV" can be used to describe a smaller SUV vehicle, but this still sits within the SUV vehicle class.

SUVs are a sub-category of trucks, offering a passenger-focused cargo area, a higher ground clearance and versatility for many terrains.

Check out our SUV car rentals.

Can I rent a car with a debit card?

We accept all major debit cards except for Maestro, Electron, Solo and pre-paid cards. To rent our 4x4s and premium vehicles, we require a credit card. All cards must have the main driver's name on it.

How much does it cost to rent a car?

Our prices may vary because car rental prices are based on various factors such as, vehicle size, seasonality, length of rental, vehicle make, availability and location. Customers are advised to start the booking process to determine the exact price.

Can I modify, extend, or cancel my reservation?

You can modify or cancel your reservation via our website. If you prepaid your booking and you cancel 3 days or more before your specified pick-up time you will receive a full refund of the total amount.  You can also call your rental branch to extend your reservation.

  1. Be 21 years of age or older.
  2. Present a full, valid driver’s licence in person at the rental counter. The licence must have been held for a minimum of 12 months. Any overseas or international drivers licences must be in English or have a NZTA approved English translation.

Do I need insurance to rent a car in New Zealand?

In New Zealand, you do need insurance to hire a car but you don’t need to organise it yourself. It’s compulsory for rental companies to provide insurance as part of their rental package. With an Enterprise Rent-a-Car, all vehicles come with standard cover for collision damage so you are covered. The excess liability for this coverage depends on the vehicle (between $2,875 and $3,450 NZD) and you can reduce your excess for a fee per day.
